The contribution of SISC members in headache research became a reality with the CIRFAC Project (Italian Centres of Research, Education and Update on Headache), which led to the formulation and validation of the "Guidelines and Recommendations for the Therapy of Migraine", edited by Mario Giacovazzo, Giuseppe Nappi and Emilio Sternieri.
Another important project conducted in the field of tension headache by the Study Group in Psychopathological Aspects in Headache, edited by Franco Michele Puca and whose works were published in the "Diagnostic-therapeutic Guidelines for Tension Headache," presented at the SISC Update Course held in Barletta, July 8-9, 1998.
SISC in 2000, under the chairmanship of Professor Gallai, established an Ad Hoc Committee, composed of 50 scholars to update the guidelines for the diagnosis and therapy of migraine and to prepare the diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for cluster headache.
The work of the Ad Hoc Committee was completed in June 2001 and the results were presented for the first time at the SISC National Congress held in Florence (June 10-13, 2001). The document was published in a preliminary version in SISC’s Newsbulletin. The English version was published in The Journal of Headache and Pain (volume 2, no. 3 in 2001) and a book in Italian with the final version was pubblished in 2002.
