The Italian Society for the Study of Headache (SISC), a national multidisciplinary scientific society, founded in 1976, will organise a National Headache Day, now in its forth edition. The event will take place on May 19, 2012, under the patronage of the President of the Italian Republic and with the patronage of the National Federation of the Orders of Physicians and Dentists and local authorities.
The event will take place throughout Italy, in squares, shopping malls and at public health facilities, where medical specialists from Headache Centres accredited by SISC will meet the needs of the public with interviews, by answering questions, and by distributing promotional material.
Particular attention will be given to young people, who often suffer from headache from childhood and adolescence, and to the problem of chronic pain and the misuse or abuse of symptomatic drugs.
The initiative aims to educate on how to properly monitor the headache, the appropriate treatment of single episodes and prevention therapy, when needed.
Information will be given on the usefulness of highly specialized centres for the treatment of "complex" headaches to which the general population, the general practitioner and the neurologist may refer to.
The informative material will be represented in the form of posters and leaflets which will be distributed among the public. The information will cover, in addition to the issues mentioned above, the diagnostic characteristics of primary headache, the map of the centres accredited by SISC in the different regions of Italy, the headache patient's bill of rights, and informative material from the patient associations.
